Yes, but there were extenuating circumstances, like the fact that the Blues were released onto the track so late that some of them were being blueflagged more or less as they left the dummy grid.

And secondly that I think the majority of the drivers were still on novice plates or just off them.

By the end of the year, the grid had clipped some two to three seconds off their times around Clay, 800 metres against Whilton's 1200(?) and would not have appeared so slow.
