You possibly hadn't realised that for each track rod, one end is Left hand thread, one end is right hand thread.
The result is that with a rose end screwed in at each end, if you secure the rose ends and turn the rod, one way will extend both threads, the other way will shorten both threads (like a turnbuckle)
Once you have realised this, then DIY's information makes sense.
I guess you thought they were either both right hand or both left hand threads so you had to adjust the length by separating the rose from column or steering arm and adjusting it from there.
Don't worry, it's a mistake many of us would make if we hadn't seen someone doing it before trying it ourselves.
