As a deterrent to spending big bucks on an engine it might work.

But as an example of how it could cause problems: I sold my best engine straight off the kart to another competitor at the end of last season.

This was a quick engine, but strangely this year it has got quicker and quicker until it has become virtually unbeatable, despite 'average' driving.

Everybody suspects that somebody else has been tinkering, but in reputation terms the new owner has a good fallback if caught with an illegal engine, of denying touching it since buying it from me. Guess where the mud will stick!!!
