2 & 3 thou (cold) are the accepted settings these days. I have, however, several different versions of 2 & 3 over the years with the most common mistake being that you can force the feeler gauge between the rocker and the valve which simply compresses the spring. Therefore the gap will be less than required. They don't call them feeler guages for nothing and with experience you do learn how to "feel" for the correct measurement.

I was taught by a very crude old school motor mechanic who used a sexual analogy to explain his theory. Virgin to slapper was the range and I have never forgotten.
