We assume your driver is using a Honda.
The odd twsit with many karting 4 strokes is that they 'spark' strangely. In many 4 stokes, they only fire every other 'cycle'. There's no point in sparking on the exhaust stroke. However, that requires 'gearing' to reduce the firing to every other cycle. Hondas are great cheapo' engines that are never going to rev highly. Honda (and others) simply decided it not WORTH creating the gearing to prevent the engine spaking on the exhaust stroke..... thus it sparks then, too!
In this way, it acts EXACTLY like a two stroke, sparking EVERY cycle... hence your need to set it to 2 stroke settings!
