So I maybe able to offer some advice, (lard ass's was very good) having been in your situation about 18 months ago, these were purchased from here (better quality than ebay) and at a race meeting:

£450 got me an ex corporate kart that was slow and heavy - but started first time and never caused any problems

£750 got me a one owner from new 1998 Stratos Kart - not the cleanest kart, but went well, and had been well looked after - the extra couple of hundred was well worth it.

£xxxx - that's all I'm saying - Mari Kart with RPM race ready engines, quicker again than the prior kart - partly because it was, partly because of skill etc

All three were race legal, and for a first pro kart (had a kart previously) I wish I'd paid a bit more upfront. It really does pay in the long term, a well looked after kart usually means that it's better all round. Also consider a rolling chassis then engines separetly, might sound more expensive - but you'd be surprised, plus on putting it together you'll end up with a better understanding of how everything works together...should there be a problem you'll have a better idea of where to start.
