If you are comparing brand new prokart chassis with monster engines against brand new 2/ chassis with out of teh box max then it will be about the same - yes. But the equivalent Elite 2/ driver will spends thousands on an engine (perhaps 2) and then spend thousands getting them rebuilt and relatively short intervals with new tyres for every race meeting.

You will never get away from motorsport being expensive and if you race on a budget then you measure your success against others in the same position within the clubman class. I started doing just that, got lapped on my first visit at WL despite being quite at my then local track some 8 years or so ago and was determined to improve. Didn't happen overnight either but my first full season at WL I think I got second in the championship with a 3-4 year old chassis and engines that, while RPM supplied them initially, I rebuilt and maintained myself. Granted that would be the equivalent of the clubman class today and I think we did the entire season on one set of tyres!!

In the abscence of a good national championship the serious racers in the UK have chosen to support certain club events - is that wrong? Should they not race? Prokarting at WL (and karting in general to be fair) and PFI are testament to growth in the class. Add the 3 sisters enduro (36 plus karts mid week) and EPEC (31 booked in for Clay - which is a national championship) and I think it would be difficult to say the class was on its knees!! Granted there are nowhere near the numbers of the old days but that was pre Rotax - another so-called budget class!!

So what is the answer. Ban the engine builders? Well that would only have limited impact and those that rely on these specialists for all their engine requirements might go backwards but those with skill and knowledge will still be able to produce good engines. And then there will be those with an open chequebook that will simply buy a dozen motors at a time and do what used to happen - sellect the parts!! The cost of chassis has hardly moved in all my time in karting even with the adverse movement in exchange rates. Second hand kit has dropped a bit mind. A year old MK1 7kart was £1800 as a rolling chassis all day long 7 or so years back. A similar aged mk3 is only £1500. So that leaves tyres - we could insist on one set for a full season and save all of £200 in the year but what happens if someone just arrives for a single round on brand new rubber- do we insist he/she uses your old set?? And finally there is seat time. You will never get away from the benefits gained in testing. Mark Foster is a case in point right now - out every weekend, winning every round on my old 2005 chassis (that will be 5 years old you know, was an ex-enduro chassis too and it has been welded up a few times).

But picking up on a point that Welshy made - arrive and drive - I don't think that is too equal a race meeting either. Granted some places are better than others and will tell you there is only 0.5 second between all of their fleet - well 0.5 second could probably cover the top 10 - 15 at PF and WL. Playstation perhaps??
