I think it very likely that Booney has already spotted the problem. Check the axle! Even more likely having had a shunt, just a small amout of run out on the axle will make a huge change in chain tension.
However from reading the posts it is not clear if the sprocket carrier is on the outside or the inside, naturally if the sprocket is on the inside i.e. between the bearings as is suggested by the use of a split sprocket a bent axle is more unlikely but not impossible.
