HELP! - GX160 won't run

I know you boys can help me out here - My son's GX160 stopped on track on Saturday. It starts OK and runs on tickover fine, but as soon as it gets any throttle the engine dies.
I've been told to strip down the carb and check for dirt as its probably a blocked jet - but as this is the first time I'll be doing any engine work and I'm a novice mechanic, is there anything else you would recommend checking/doing etc?
I'll give it an oil change too while I'm at it.
Any help gratefully received!
