The main reason for a floating disc on a race car for instance and similar for a kart is for heat transfer in cast iron brake discs.

When you apply brake the disc gets hot. on a fixed disc system the hot disc wants to expand with heat. in a fixed system the disc cannot do this. the disc either warps or cracks as it cannot expand into the carrier. a floating carrier will allow the disc to heat up and expand into the float. This allows the brakes to run hotter with out warping or cracking simples
