In my experience you can do very well with little money if you spend wisely. When i was competing in TKM we spent very little compared to some but won trophys and ended up 3rd in a club championship. We did this by looking after our tyres chains and sprockets, always ran the engines ever so slightly rich and prepared the kart well. A fancy motorhome etc aint going to make anyone quicker. As you say a well prepared straight set up kart and a decend motor is really all you need to do well. And its got to be fun fun fun all the way for me.
