"Working to a fiche is called blueprinting,"

Although sometimes blue printing an engine is the process of making sure that mating surfaces are exactly aligned.

For very close tolerances this was achieved by scraping, a process using engineers blue and a scraper. For example, you scraped white metal bearings to fit them exactly to the crankshaft.

But even blued engines had to match a fiche.
