If you have an inboard and an outboard clutch (which is quite common) when looking at them from the open side of the clutch looking at the shoes it will be one is soft and one is harsh. Turning the harsh one through 180 degrees (sprocket now outboard) and it too becomes soft.

the diagram, I fine, describes this way better than I can at this time of night
