The part about being overtaken on the straight.....

You need to see the 'big picture' here. As a ROUGH rule.... if a kart with IDENTICAL power LEAVES a corner 1 mph faster than you.... he will accelerate at an IDENTICAL rate to you for the whole straight.... and will thus have been traveling 1mph faster than you for the WHOLE of the straight. Where he overtakes you, in THAT case, just depends on how far back he was when he started. So.... just knowing WHERE they overtake you will NOT tell you what's happening. You need to watch the 'gap' between you from the entry of the last corner to the entry of the next. If you both leave the corner at identical speeds and he THEN overtakes you in the fisrt 50 metres.... then he's lower geared or more powerful than you are.... etc..

Obviously, the above example is an over simplification...... but it's damend CLOSE to the truth!

Aim for the following.... Enter the corner with the MINIMUM of steering application. Get the kart to slide so that, once IN the corner, you have ZERO lock applied. That means NO oversteer and NO understeer! I know that sounds impossible...... just watch the REALLY quick guys.... you'll see it happening at every corner. The quickest karters move the steering LEAST! That requires you to go through the corner FASTER than you are at the moment..... trust me! The crude principle is that the kart SLOWS DOWN when you apply ANY steering lock. Test it and see. Push the kart with ONE FINGER when the lock is 'straight': that should be easy. Now get a friend to apply 2 inches of TURN and hold it there..... now try to push the kart with one finger.....! Then go to the hospital and get you dislocated finger fixed...! Steering lock equals DRAG!

The next thing is to apply FULL power as soon as you can.... which should be once the kart HAS managed the turn-in and is (ideally) at Zero-lock! Now watch your drivers and see how LATE they are applying FULL power compared to quick drivers!!! I'll bet you guys are not hitting full power until WELL after the apex.... that's LATE!

Those changes in driving style will take SECONDS out of your lap times!

Again.... that's a WILD simplification but it's CLOSE to being correct!
