The relevant paragraph seems to be this one:

"1.1.3. Organisers must adhere strictly to the Class designations listed in the MSA Competitors’ and Officials’ Yearbook or MSA Kart Race Yearbook and must not in any way modify the title or Classes, or

permit the use of unauthorised engines, unless given specific permission by the MSA."

A lot will depend on exactly how one words the application to the MSA, I suspect.

I doubt you could get away with calling the race "Rotax Max" but then stipulating that all the engines were Aixro XR30.

You might get away with creating a local class, ( as I believe Dunkeswell did with their interpretation of Rotax Heavy) called say " RotaxX30 which raced X30 and Rotax as a mixed grid. There are strict procedures for this and of course, you cannot have multi-club championships of a local class.

It appears the MSA are concerned that karts do not have wildly different performances in the same class, and tyres more than anything else that dictate speed. Understandably the various commercial classes do not wish to have comparable tyres / performance to any other class.

Ultimately though the approval lies with the MSA and I suspect that they would not approve of such manipulations as the RotaxX30 'local' and for most clubs there are too many hoops to jump through when there is the easier alternative of a a split grid, unless someone took on the thankless task of driving the paperwork through.

To run events like the recent WorldFormula grid at Clay during the MSA meeting, the class designation of Tyro was used :

"1.4. A Tyro Kart Event is a Kart event run primarily as entry level Karting, Competitors must hold the minimum of a Kart Clubman Licence.
1.5. Senior Tyro Kart. For 16 year olds and over.
Engines may not exceed 15hp in total per Kart."

The main problem may not be the MSA though. As we have seen in previous threads drivers can be extraordinarily precious about "their" class and resent running with other classes, even when / if the performance of the karts is similar.

( The logical formula, proven over the last decade is that used for Formula Blue, where drivers of any weight are equally competitive and no driver carries more than 10kg of ballast. Other classes find this approach difficult to implement because it would put them at odds with similar classes with global ambitions. Otherwise we would end up with a UK Rotax spec and a World Rotax spec, and no doubt many drivers would demand to drive the World Speceven if they never intended to drive outside their club meetings. Just as many drivers insist on holding National A licences, even though they never attend National A races.

Lastly, and in the same vein, Twin Prokarts don't regularly race at MSA meetings because there aren't/ weren't enough drivers in clubs willing to push for their karts to be included at meetings, and that apathy led to the recognition that maintaining them as a formal MSA class when they didn't appear regularly as part of an MSA event was nugatory. Hence they dropped off the MSA list of approved classes, when the MSA were being told that there were too many classes anyway.
