Octane is already in most petrol as it'd cost a fortune to refine it all out.

The more octane the less likely the fuel will pre detonate. However, other compounds can be used. The overall effectiveness to pre detonate is then scored according to the amount of octane required to be present to give the same effect.

So, you could no octane in the fuel at all and still have an octane rating.

Also, forecourt fuel can vary a fair bit. Even from the exact same pump.
