Thanks for the valuable recommendation of not touching the hot exhaust! Wish I'd thought of that. I spoke with DEP this morning, there were two failures this weekend at PF, one of which was mine. In fairness to DEP they have responded very quickly and a replacement has been sent to me, I'd have to give them 10/10 for customer service. No idea what's caused the failure, but I'm sure DEP will respond appropriately if there is going to be a major issue.
The heat shield definitely needs a rethink. Sadly, there were a couple of kids needing attention to minor burns at PF, one was in our team awning. He was just being a typical kid and landed up with a nasty burn on his arm whilst helping clean his kart.
