As soon as you start it, blip the revs up a few times to break the rings in. It really only does take that long and it's the first few seconds that can really count. Run it up to temperature and then let it cool right off. Then run it for about an hour as normal, but avoiding extended high rpm use, before changing the oil (pour out quickly through the filler hole while hot) and if you're really keen lapping the valves lightly (a must with a new head).
