you really need to ask what you are improving by any maintenance.

Lapping is re-sealing after leaks.

yes, lapping is wearing away the metal seats by using grinding paste but the alternative is leaks.
-It's your choice...

Testing for leaks helps you decide.

oh and when you question if such a small improvement is worth it just remember that if you find ten such 1/10th hp boosts then you have found a whole 1 hp!(conversely if you ignore ten small issues you may be giving away a whole 1 hp)

My tips for lapping=learn what makes a good seat and stop as soon as the seat is achieved.
