Lee,
we had a Loncin that my son's played on for ages - the first thing we did was degovern it but don't forget to disconnect the low oil warning switch, otherwise it cuts out on corners!
If you just want to get used to karting, I would degovern it then leave it at that at least for a while, tuning them only gives marginal increases in performance and can significantly reduce reliability and engine life.
