good compression is essential but acceleration is also essential.

That's accelerating from one rev range to another and all down to bearings.

When you have a good engine take note of acceleration time from mid range to max revs.

Without this info you are just guessing if your engine is tailing off in performance.

New bearings, including a run in big end, will help an engine accelerate. Worn bearings steal power.

The only way to know if an engine is past its best is to compare present readings with previous reading.

Some engines never reach the performance of others so its only guessing to say it can be improved to equal others.

If you do fit new bearings then expect it to slower at the start of its running in process.

It will get faster, but how fast is down to a number of factors.

Bearings wear according to lubrication used and temperature reached during use.

If you have time to get the new bearings freed off and the engine run in then go ahead and have it freshened up.
