hopefully this is the type of chain splitter you have used?

# Only push the pins out enough to separate the chain
# use the 'cutout' position of the block to lay the pin in
# lay the loose side plate opposite the cut out
# slowly force the pin through the link and into the side plate, using the allen bolt
# make sure the pins are central in both side plates

If you have pushed the pin/s completely out of the side plates you will have to tap them back into one of the side plates before using the splitter block. Hold a pin vertically with some point nose pliers on a vise or surface plate and tap the side plate over the pin. Repeat for second pin.
