increasing the size of the main jet allows more fuel into the engine.

A perfect afr(air/fuel ratio) is around 16:1

If increasing the jet makes the afr closer to the ideal then you will go faster.

If the afr is already set to the optimum you will go slower and foul the plugs by making it too rich.
(all of the above assumes the airfilter is clean)

So... test and check the plug for colour.
Ideally you want it to be light brown and dry.
