The switch is not for turning the engine on; it is called a "Kill Switch" for a very good reason. All the switch does it to earth the ignition system on to the engine thus preventing the spark, and therefore killing the engine. To stop your engine, just earth the bare wire to they engine and it will stop. Repair the wire with a proper, well insulated connector, and you'll be fine.
I once has a problem whilst leading a race when our Alfano had stopped working and we took it off, but left the RPM lead still attached to the engine kill switch. This then shorted to earth at the steering wheel and intermitently cut the engine out!! Beware!!
