The advice I got to counter this, & or worn chains, with the sprocket bolts slack & the split in the sprocket covered by the chain wrap the chain around the sprocket as far as you can, with one hand put tension into the chain around the sprocket with your hand, then tighten the bolts up. It’s not easy on your own, but it does work.
