Undoubtably a bit of end float helps with piston/bore centralisation for minimum friction etc. As well as freeing the cam journals etc. But I never quite understand why it has not been made legal to do this with gaskets. Because it is quite clear that for those who wish to create the same thing invisibly, there are multiple ways that are probably almost undetectable, thus cheats could and probably do gain an advantage.

Furthermore a certain amount could probably also be achieved with parts selection.

Thus by making the number of gaskets free, one other means of skewing the playing field would be removed.
