gennes tend to have a tapered end to the pto, whereas clutches need a parallel pto.

The generator will prob' have a linkage from a vertical shaft, protuding from the crankcase, to the carb linkage.
Internally there will be a governor mechanism.
It's all simple enough to modify.

The crankshaft can be swapped for a suitable one if it has a tapered end.
I guess it all depends on your regs and if the engine model is allowed.
Compare the parts prices and work necessary against purchasing a suitable engine.
Benefit of the diy work is you will end up knowing far more than just dropping an engine on the kart.
