my first reaction is 'does the popping etc reduce performance?' I used to use the overrun noise to check if my lads cadet gearing was ok... When it popped I knew he was getting 5,750 revs and the engine was on song.

It may be too rich.
or
It may be that the engine needs decarbonising.

Try a compression test on both engines and let us know what you find.
Remove the plug and see what colour it is.
