I tend to use the shortest chain as possible depending on the sprocket size but I do use 3 different chain lengths as that's the only way to keep the engine as far back as possible. I think my chains are 106 108 110 but I do run rear sprockets from 68 - 82 allowing for when it is wet. But 40cm movement of the engine I don't think will cause to much of a problem. I tend only to use the 110 chain in the rain on a big sprocket.
