Ignition timing is the point where the plug fires and ignites the fuel charge withing the combustion chamber.

The Gx ignition timing is triggered, by a magnet on the flywheel passing the static ignition coil.

The flywheel is keyed to the crankshaft so the ign timing happens at the same point every revolution.

The keyway in the flywheel can be cast according to the tolerance that day on the assembly line.

This leads to variation in the position of the keyway and therefore a variation in the position of that engines ign timing.

Setting a standard ignition timing would enable people to set the engine to a benchmark or standard setting, thus levelling the playing field in this area.

Leaving the key out of the assembly allows the flywheel to be mounted on the taper and set at any position you desire.

One last point: the piece of rectangular steel that allows the crank to turn the flywheel is the key.
The machined square bottomed slot in both the crankshaft and the flywheel is called the keyway.
