As your location is Coventry ?, why not pop down to Stretton on a practice day, have a chat with the guys in the shop there,
Start doing something you can handle first, Last round of the Rye house Prokart championship is next saturday (8th) , Teams will be there from early until race finish early evening, most will chat to you.
Another direction is maybe the Daytona circuit at Milton Keynes, D-max karts are good value practice/racing, .
And of course there is the annual kart show at Silverstone at the end of the month , google `kartmania`.
