erm....its not ludicrous......Ian, you constantly request that people test under the same conditions on the same day, and produce real data, yet your post is full of assumed opinions...eh?.....Matt from Dartford Karting does all the dyno validation for a certain motorsport "regulating body" and is dyno testing 4-stroke engines all the time, I'm more than inclined to believe him on the basis that he is a very good engine builder and dyno operator.......the key word here is "windage" the thicker oils causes excessive viscous drag upon the rotating and reciprocating parts in the wet sump, so principally the crankshaft and con-rod when they slap through the wet sump of oil with every rotation, the thinner the oil, the less drag occurs and, yes windage does create heat in the sump of oil, which makes it even thinner, so even less drag occurs, most synthetic oils in road cars are validated to run constantly at 150DegC, without problems, it will not evaporate.......running oils at a nominal temperature of 100DegC is also nothing in todays road car engine design industry, I should know.......

Having regularly change the oil in our honda cadet the difference in room temperature viscosity between Joe gibbs "DRIVEN" XP10 0W10 and the older "cool power" is highly noticeable, its like the difference between water and thick gravy.
