This topic always seems to result in a prolonged debate.

In certain circles the meaning of the phrase CLimate Change is very specific, with climate change meaning something slightly different. notice the capitalisation of the former.

There is no debate within the scientific community that i know of as regards climate change. That is to say the climate is changing BUT the cause is not known. That cause could be natural or man-made.

On the other hand I have noted debate within the scientific community about Climate Change. When the capital 'C's are used it should be taken to mean that the cause of the climate change is humans, industry and vehicles as well as any other man-made cause that can be suggested.

Unfortunately some of the media (not including journals such as New Scientist) see the debate about Climate Change and assume it applies to climate change as well. In the same way some see it the other way round and refuse to accept any argument to say that humans may not be the cause of the climate change.

There is further debate about the extent of the problem. The method of temperature measurement used for the documentary 'An Inconvenient Truth' will often give exaggerated readings and for the purposes of reliable science has started to be replaced with a new method (I cannot remember the two methods but i will try to find the data). The data from the new method SUGGESTS a small impact from man-made sources while it has been claimed by some that the first method PROVES that there is a large impact from man-made sources.

Further debate can be found in the predictions of the future of our climate. Suggestions vary from the climate change occuring to a point whereby all life is unsupportable (not often accepted) through to an eventual reversal of the seasons (this suggests the earths axis altering) to the suggestion that the climate will correct itself.

It should also be noted that the term climate change has replaced global warming. Global warming is occuring but the extent is debated. One of the temperature measurement methods SUGGESTS that global warming is a major problem while the other suggests that the global temperature is only marginally (small fractions of a degree) ahead of where it would be if it was solely caused by the earth coming out of an Ice Age.
