Ian,read through it again ,please,as I said it moves 12 -13 ON PAPER which is calculated down to give an actual variation of 3-4 degrees E-W no where near the theoretical 12-13, it shifts half a degree in each 3 year period so it takes approx 18 years for it to move through this relatively small arc ,one way, there is some calculation which takes into account the fact that the Earths line of magnetism between Poles is not true.Hence the reduction in the figures for magnetic variation.

Obviously there isn't 12-13 degrees or we would all have to live near the equator and probably hold on for dear life as it moves back and forth. If that is the way it reads my apologies. To clarify . I have been taught the earth moves from it's vertical axis by 3 degrees east and West at a rate of 0.5 degrees in each 3 years.So 18 years to go West then 18 back to 0degrees then a further 18to 3 degrees east then 18 back to 0 so 72 years to give it's full sweep of it's movement.

Having spent time within the Arctic circle ,and in places where the magnetic effect causes havoc with needle swing,we had to be taught correctly. If this information is now incorrect I am willing to accept that and apologise ,but this is what we were taught and it was demmed correct at the time. Wish we had GPS back then ,would have been easier.
