Ian - I think there are three quite different albeit linked issues here.
The first is convincing people that there is climate change and there is enough in the papers and on TV to convince most people that the climate is changing - melting ice caps etc.
The second issue is convincing everyone that they have some responsibility for the problem. again there has been so much written about the effects of burning fossil fuels that there should be little doubt that this is at least part of the problem - views will differ on the amount of damage.
The final issue and by far the most difficult is convincing people to actually do something about it. In a way it is a bit ironic that we see these threads so often on a karting forum where most of us are burning fuel purely for our fun! My son was doing a bit on climate change at school and said we should all try to reduce our use. He suggested we should turn down the heating over the winter - I said we could do far more by not karting - he wanted to end the discussion!
I think we all get more cynical through government actions - they claim that climate change is a serious issue and use that to justify increasing taxes on fuel guzzling cars and fuel duty in general but as others have said - this is like saying "it is OK if you can afford it". Reducing speed limits and then enforcing them would make a real difference but this will not happen as the politicians are too scared they will lose votes and their jobs! Perhaps if we see actions taken by the government that will make a difference - as suggested earlier a limit on emissions for new cars - then the public may start to accept that they are serious about this problem rather than be cynical that it is just a way of justifying tax increases.
