You don’t see Mercedes going: why not? So what if they’ve had success in the past. That really is ancient history under present conditions. They now have to explain to their shareholders why, while their equity is going down the toilet and they cannot have any dividends, it is necessary to spend hundreds of millions on having a couple of overpaid drivers go around in circles for a few weekends a year. How is that going to sell cars when nothing else does? The same case will also have to be made to some pretty anxious – yet still quite powerful – trade unions (IG Metall). I’d love to be a fly on the wall.
