I think its fair to say that you don't use a calculator for absolutely everything. That would be a monumental waste of time.
I just had a quick look at the A-Level specification for 'Core Mathematics' (it was called 'Pure Mathematics' when i did it) and its missing some of the stuff I did in 2003. Matrices, Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors amongst others. You may not be doing OCR (first examimers that I came across) but I don't see any mention of logarithmic tables as I know them. To be fair I don't think Log tables should be on the syllabus, its an outdated method just like an abacus.
