Having worked in a mainstream car company, I never saw any emphasis on weight saving as means of gaining efficiencies. For sure it must have been a consideration but it certainly wasn't high enough up the priority tree, as emissions was for example, to be a mantra all employees would be striving for. It obviously chimes with the increase in obesity of production cars over the last 20-30 years.

You're right that weight doesn't necessarily correlate to safety in a car, but in a collision involving cars FROM THE SAME ERA, the heavier one would likely come off better. We must never compare cars of different design generations as the improvements in safety within even a 5 year period are phenomenal.
