I spend 8 hours a day on my laptop on average - it's my tool kit. I therefore want something that performs well, looks good, is of good quality and is just that bit 'special'. Over its lifetime it will probably cost me a few pence an hour over a plastic laptop PC - I can afford that so why not?
Life is not just about utility and I feel sorry for you if you think it is.
I could go to KFC but I'd rather go to a nice restaurant. I could buy a Kia but I've prefer a Porsche. I could live in a flat but I'd prefer a house. I could buy suits from Top Man but I'd prefer bespoke. I could buy a plasma from Costco but I'd rather have B&O. I could have bought a cheap PC laptop but I bought a Macbook.
