I said that that speeding is overwhelmingly a victimless crime because it is committed by virtually every driver many times every day without any collision occouring. You have said nothing that disproves that. Just because 1000 fatal accidents have speed as a contributory factor does not mean that the accident would not have been fatal if the speed limit was adhered to in each case. And dont try the "your wife/child" bit - we all know somebody who has died in a road accident.

No, Ian I did not say that I thought the numbers of deaths low. What I said was that the CHANGE in that number that will be achieved by vigorous enforcement of the speed limits will be low.
Your claim that I think murder victims are not worth "bothering" about (I assume you mean investigating the crime) is not only wrong but the reverse - I believe that all that police manpower, money, effort and technology currently hurled at the motorist by idiot politicians wanting to be seen to be doing something would be better spent trying to reduce the rising number of murders that are happening in this country.
Of course every death on the road is a tragedy for somebody, but we either reduce it to zero by a blanket 10mph speed limit, or we have to balance the number of deaths with what is realistic/practical/fair to reduce them.
So Ian, given that right now, the only way to stop ALL deaths on the road is for nobody to exceed 10mph are you going to start driving everywhere at 10mph?
