Call me cynical, but wouldn't the fact that the man has achieved pretty much everything (a few times over) that he ever wanted to achieve and sort of decided he's in need of a new challenge; might just be a more probable reason for his resignation?

Only recently we had a similar resignation/retirement from a similar person who achieved pretty much every thing (quite a few times over)!
I know that the association is striking, particularly given that they were/are in FIAT employment, but that sort of happens when you're THAT successful at what you do, you look for a new challenge.
