'tkm kart' you are along the correct lines, as in 'a button is pressed' and all of a suddern a surge of extra power is available to the driver.

However im afraid its nothing at all like nitrous oxide that is giving them the extra boost! KERS has noting to do with the engine itself.

This year F1 cars (well, some of them at the moment - Ferrari, Mclaren, Renault and Heidfeld in the BMW) are equipt with Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS), which 'basically' capture some of the energy when the car is breaking that would normally be lost to heat into the atmosphee within a conventional brake disk. The pads grip the disk, this causes friction that slows the car, but at the same time heats the brake disk - this heat is then lost to the atmosphere.

Most of the teams have opted for an electronic system that uses in effect a dynamo to charge up a battery whilst breaking. Williams have developed a flywheel system, however they are not using it as yet.

With regards the electrical configuration, the battery would be connected to an electric motor that has the ability to output 80BHP. The regulations have limited this 80BHP burst to 6.8 seconds per lap (for a number of reasons that I would imagine are safety related).

The driver is able to deploy this extra 80BHP per lap at any point he choses, however once his time limitation has run out, he has to wait until he crossed the start / finish line until he can use his 'boost' button again - very much like the use of nitrous oxide, just it is not nitrous oxide!

Hope this helps.
