Automatic Number Plate Recognition system has revealed that over the past year 100,000 vehicles not possessing any motor insurance have been seized, of which around 45,000 have been crushed.
of course ANPR has a weakness, cloned /sunday plates but unlike the speed cameras you have to go to the trouble of finding a plate that matches your car and its colour.......a bobby will get that info live
most of these cameras have a boy in blue behind them and pull the vechicle there and then, of course once pulled they will check more than just your insurance, they will check everything, vechicle, tax, driver etc
my big issue with "passive" cameras is not what they do but what they try to replace, you can not address road safety by just looking at one issue.....you have to look at the whole picture, best way to do that is to promote the threat you will get caught, not 2 weeks later via a NIP but on the day, lose your car, lose your right to drive and face time in the clink
i am 95% confident i could drive from the top of uk to the bottom under the influence, with no tax,no insurance in a shed of car just by buying some "show plates" of ebay or swopping plates....
if you care about road safety then that perception needs changing..sure someone will come along and say cost....well our elected spend billions on "bailing out" people who have made mistakes, what would most of us want the money we provide spent on....we live on a island but the service that protects us when we get close to the sea is a charity..RNLI
noone has asked us where we want our taxes spent to improve our lifes, would the public back more traffic cops and lose the 2012 5 rings circus, we dont know because we have not been asked, why because they happy for us to elect them and bask in that result but scares them to death that we might have some control outside of voting for a team....a team that once elected have a right to stop listening to those that voted them in
