There are a few possibilities but all point to the Master Boot Record not being found.

1) A virus has removed/corrupted the MBR.
2) Hard disk corruption has removed/corrupted the MBR.
3) Physical failure of the hard disk.
4) Hard Disk disconnected.

The easiest to check should be number 4. It won't be detected by the BIOS. If so turn the laptop upside down and there will be several panels. Under one of them will be the hard disk. It is possible a shock has caused it to unseat from its socket.

For number 3, the BIOS may also fail to detect it but not necessarily. For 1 & 2 the BIOS will detect the disk but can't find the MBR. There are several recovery procedures to fix this.

If you need help checking the BIOS let me know. If it turns out that it isn't physically dislodged, fixing it is beyond the scope of a forum post and can be a bit of a pain.
