When private sector workers have had to face pay cuts, I see no reason why Royal Mail staff should be any different. No disrespect to postal workers, but it's not exactly skilled work either, hence why the Royal Mail management can easily look to temporary workers.
Unions are also one of my pet hates. If you're a skilled and in demand worker you will get paid more. If you're largely unskilled with people queuing for jobs you will get paid less. It's basic supply and demand and I fail to understand how Unions can justify maintaining artificially high pay demands using what amounts to bully-boy tactics. In my opinion, unions have been the downfall of industry in this country and the US.
