Davy..... you are showing a lack of knoiwledge of the meaning of the word 'Chaos', and that's the reason I asked you to look it up! It's actually quite frustrating that a term so often used by 'laymen' means one thing to those who use it scientifically and the complete REVERSE to Joe-Public!

It's easiest to think of it this way (even if it is not 100% accurate):-

The word 'Chaos' (used scientifically) is about the hidden ORDER that there is within things which we always thought was completely random!

Have a look at this page:-

http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://explorationscience.org/Articles/chaos/Mandelbrot_set.jpg&imgrefurl=http://explorationscience.org/Articles/Chaos.htm&usg=__eeDu4P2kZfgFtyt0DUFkpdJ5rlM=&h=303&w=400&sz=38&hl=en&start=1&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=q-lgKQHEmQBSBM:&tbnh=94&tbnw=124&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dmandelbrot%2Bset%26hl%3Den%26rlz%3D1W1GGIE_en%26um%3D1

The STUNNING pattern is created by what YOU would think of as a 'chaotic' system.... and yet, when plotted like a graph, it produces that shape! What's even more STUNNING about it is that, with a perfect copy of that picture, it makes no difference how much you 'zoom in' or 'out' on the picture, the pattern remains IDENTICAL. Literally, it makes NO diference if you zoom in to infinitesimal size of expand out to the size of the universe, the pattern looks IDENTICAL!

That's how much 'order' there REALLY' can be within 'Chaos'!

Think of it as 'Chaos Theory' being a way to describe things which APPEAR 'Chaotic' ..... but AREN'T!

*******************

So..... the weather system may be 'Chaotic' but you NOW know that there appears to be some VERY simple 'equations' hidden behind it. 'Weather Science' is already aware of the existence of these simple 'equations', all they are trying to do now is to find the NUMBERS involved in those 'equations'.... that, of course, is the tough bit!

And so.... just because single events may well APPEAR 'chaotic', that does NOT mean that there isn't an underlying 'order'. To take a simple example... no matter how rough and 'random' the waves appear on the sea, you still KNOW that the tide is coming in or going out. Regardless of the waves, there IS a simple pattern in there!
