In my experience, Macs serve a couple of purposes:
They are excellent for the few applications specifically designed for them, especially graphic design.
Most people who own Macs have one in an attempt to look 'cool' as Apple is viewed by the general public as a 'cool' brand. Can say the very same thing about people who buy iPhones, its simply to fit in with the 'it' crowd, desipte the fact that as a smartphone, theres far better options out there. Its a cultural thing. PC's, Microsoft and Windows have never been viewed as a 'cool' brand.
Macs have always been and always will be over priced for what they are.
Linux, whilst highly reliable and having great uses as a server platform in itself and Unix, has always been developed by people who never seem to think what the greater number of computer users want in an Operating System. People want simplicity and compatability with their other software and hardware, too often Linux desktop operating systems fail at this.
We are currently in the process of upgrading our company workstations to Windows 7 and ive been mightly impressed with it (to the point where ive gone and forked out for my own copy for home use).
