You will find that within mechanical engineering design departments, there are 3 basic levels beneath the first "management" level.
At the bottom you have jobs like development technician, cad technician, tracer, draughtsperson, & detail draughtsperson.
At the next level, any of the previous with the word "senior" in front, as well as design draughtsperson, design engineer, project engineer.
Ar the highest non management level, you will typically find senior or principle design engineer, senior or principle project engineer.
You would typically find that the lowest level would pay in the region of £15k - £25k, the middle level around £20k - £30k, and the top level perhaps £25k - £40k.
Of course I am generalising here, and the specific industry can make a significant difference (pharmaceuticals pays more for instance) but this is basically how it is. People leaving uni & walking into jobs paying £40k are very much in the minority!
