It was the uprights that failed, I'd guess at the point of attachment of the lower wishbone (since that is usually the area the tethers attach to). If the wheels had fallen off (as Itpro seems to be implying) you'd still be able to see the uprights, brake discs, calipers etc attached to the wishbones. You can't see any stub axle because they're just long enough for the wheel nut and retaining clip.
As a point of interest, the wheel tethers attach the uprights to the tub and are designed to stop the wheel/upright assembly from flying around after an impact. If the uprights fail the tethers are useless.
