I lost my job in Nov 08 and only just found work as a joiner this April, in that time i was on JSA at £63.50 a week, my mortgage interest was paid by the DWP, i got council tax benefit but thats all.

I was on 36k employed too not SE and every job out there was on for 18k to 20k max, still i applied and had interview after interview, the joke centre were a waste of time, my advisor had just started there himself.........he used to be a DG salesman before.

After a 3 month review i asked about the possibility of going SE and if there were any government grants to get me started, yes was the reply, business link will go through your business plan and you'll get a £1000 grant, WTF.......that wouldn't even get me a decent van, so that idea was out the window.

Courses, i asked if there was any i could go on, yes was the reply, we will help you break down any barriers that are stopping you from working, ok how about plastering, always comes in handy being a joiner, sorry too expensive, how about basic plumbing, handy if i get offered a job with the council on their housing refurb programs, kitchens and such like, no sorry too expensive, i wont bother you then with basic electrics then.

After a year you get signed over to new deal, ha ha what a joke they are. We have access to hundreds of jobs that arent advertised elsewhere, wow you CV is excellent even if slightly too long (4 pages), we'll look at shortening that for you, which they did......1 page it is now!

Every day for 2 whole weeks they rang me at 9am, we have this job, we think it suits you, are you going to apply, course i had to otherwise i get sanctioned and i lose a week of benefit. We have this bench joiners job, are you going to apply, sorry im not a bench joiner........oh ok!

Next week, we have a bench joinery job come up, sorry im not a bench joiner....oh ok!

2 days later, we have a bench, sorry.....oh ok! and so it went on and on and on.

Anyway, checking the JCP website daily i came across a vacancy from a company i wrote to and had 2 interviews with last september, saw they were after more joiners so i bypassed the joke centre and rang them direct, asked to speak to the MD who interviewed me last time to be told he's moved on, girl said she'd get the new MD to ring me, 6pm that night the mobile went, looking at your CV now, going on what the other MD has wrote on it i will offer you the job NOW!

1 week later i was working for them and the closing date for the job still had 3 weeks to run, 30k a year, laptop, phone, credit card, brand new van with personal use, pension and life insurance.

Oh and guess who's gonna get the credit for finding me a job........NEW DEAL! I'm another they can add to their target so they get their bonus, truely a waste of time they were.

So now that im working and earing £600 a week, i get a months grace with the council tax benefit, a months grace with my mortgage, where was the help when i needed it, when i was struggling to pay bills, wanted to go on courses, i get more help now when im on 600 a week, barmy!
